An illusion is not a failure of perception. It is a clue to how perception works.

Your brain does not passively record the world like a camera. It predicts, filters, groups, compares, fills gaps, stabilizes motion, estimates depth, assigns meaning and constantly chooses what deserves attention. Illusions are beautiful because they expose those hidden rules. They turn perception inside out.

Why this matters

Your brain is a prediction engine with a sensory correction loop.

A useful way to understand perception is as continuous hypothesis testing. The brain has prior expectations about edges, lighting, gravity, faces, objects, language and causality. Incoming sensory evidence updates those expectations. Most of the time this produces a stable and astonishingly useful model of the world. An illusion is what happens when the usual shortcut meets a carefully chosen edge case.

ContextNothing is seen alone. Surroundings change brightness, color, size and meaning.
PredictionThe mind anticipates what should be there and can fill in what is missing.
AttentionAwareness is selective. Unattended information can be present yet effectively invisible.
